Teachers Lost More Than Government In This Strike – Hon. Naboth Namanya

Hon. Naboth Namanya, Rubabo MP has said teachers have lost more than the government in this strike. He says much as the strike may have done something, the government didn’t lose much.

“This is a lesson to the government to critically think before they make decisions. The government should know what they have promised. In this industrial action by the arts teachers, the teachers and the government lost, but the teachers lost more.”

Naboth Namanya asked the government how increasing the salaries of only science teachers is going to help.

“The arts teachers stuck to their guns initially, but gradually, they were coerced and had to give up on the battle. But, where was research conducted that when you increase teachers’ salaries, you get better results from science teachers?”

However, much as teachers are going back to school, Naboth says they should follow up on whether teachers are going to teach as they ought.

He says they might have agreed to go back to class but to do nothing. Yesterday, Museveni ordered teachers to go back to class because there is no increase in salary to give them as teachers.

Meanwhile, Naboth recommends that there should be salary review commission.

“We need to get a salary review commission to review all salaries from the President. How can I, a legislator, get more money than the President? That’s if it’s true that he earns UGX 3.6 million.”
