UN Considers Reforms To Enhance Effectiveness Of Peacekeeping Operations

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres is considering a range of reforms to improve peacekeeping operations. To this end, he is exploring ways to make peacekeeping operations more effective and efficient, including through the use of technology and increased cooperation with regional organisations.

However the ultimate goal is to ensure that peacekeeping operations are better equipped to respond to the changing nature of conflicts and to protect the lives of those who are affected by them.

Certainly the United Nations has been involved in peacekeeping operations since the 1940s, and over the years, the nature of conflicts and the challenges facing peacekeepers have evolved significantly.

Today, peacekeeping operations are more complex and dangerous than ever before, with peacekeepers often facing threats from armed groups, terrorist organizations, and other non-state actors.

However while addressing these challenges, the UN Secretary-General explored a range of reforms to peacekeeping operations.

UN to increase cooperation with regional organisations
