How Abubakar Shekau Became Boko Haram Leader– His Mother Falmata Speaks Out

In the Nigerian city known as Maiduguru, the towns become smaller and the roads get narrower, there are many security check points every where, it’s the kind of place where people doing their best to protect themselves. All this is because of the Boko Haram insurgency headed by Abubakar Shekau.

At the village called Shekau in Yobe state, community leaders and elders take Voice of America reporter to meet Falmata Abubakar, the so called mother of Abubakar Shekau, the Boko Haram leader.

The father to this Boko Haram leader was a district Imam before he died a few years back.

Faltama said she had never been approached by any journalist before and she does not know his son’s where about, I don’t even know whether he’s dead or alive, it’s God who knows. I last saw him about 15 years ago, ‘’she said.

Hiding their hometown because of Abubakar !

The local people here keep saying that they normally hide the fact that they come from Abubakar Shekau’s home village simply because they fear to be pointed at that they could be having a connection with the Boko Haram.

My son left his hometown when he was still a young boy to go in Maiduguri to study Islamic education, he studied for quite many years and he became an Almajiri after memorizing a huge part of the Quran. In the process of his studies, Shekau met the founder of Boko Haram by the names of Muhammed Yusuf who believes that Western education is a sin, my son was convinced, ‘’ says Falmata. Ever since my son met with Mohammed Yusuf, I have never seen him again, yes i accept the fact that Shekau is my son and I love him like what every mother does to his son, but our characters are different, he has brought many problems to many people. It’s my prayer for God to show him the right direction, ‘’says Falmata.

In 2009, the Nigerian security agents killed Mohammed Yusuf and Abubakar Shekau took over as Boko Haram leader. Shekau is accused of killing over 30,000 people in Lake Chad region and northeast Nigeria.
