CAF President Dr. Patrick Moetsepe has paid tribute to Ugandan match official, Peter Kabugo who collapsed and died on the pitch. In a statement posted on social media platform X, CAF said that it’s deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident.
The federation also went ahead to extend its condolences to his family and the entire Ugandan football fraternity.
“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) President Dr Patrice Motsepe is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Uganda Premier League match official, Peter Kabugo who collapsed during a football league match at Wankulukuku Stadium in Uganda. The CAF President Dr Motsepe conveys his and CAF’s deepest condolences to the family of Peter Kabugo. To the Federation of Ugandan Football (“FUFA”) and its president Moses Magogo and Ugandan people. May Peter Kabugo’s soul rest in eternal peace.” the CAF President tweeted.
It should be noted that the country was left in shock after Kabugo collapsed and died en route to the hospital. However, the unfortunate incident happened on the 1st of November 2024 at the Muteesa II stadium in Wankulukuku.
This was in the game between the current league champions SC Villa as they took on UPDF.
In the 70th minute, Villa launched a counterattack that resulted into a goal. The Jogoos left back Simom Ssemyange quickly noticed Kabugo in the deck.
He signaled to the center referee George Olumu who called the medics quickly and he was put into an ambulance and driven to the nearby Bismillah Hospital in Kitebi but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the game continued till the end before news of the unfortunate occurrence started circulating.
