This left four people dead and hundreds of others severely injured. It is however feared that these numbers will increase with time as scared spectators were left trapped under the rubble.
The tragedy happened in the small town of El Espinal, located some 95 miles southwest of Bogotá. When posted, the collapse footage immediately went viral on social media.
The footage showed dozens of people teasing and playing with a wounded bull during a popular event known as corraleja. Then out of nowhere, three levels of stands gave away, trapping hundreds of people underneath.
While people screamed, others jumped off their seats, rushing to offer a hand trying to heave wood and other debris aside.
Hector Ortiz, 64, could not believe the scene. A woman next to him shouted, “That balcony is about to fall down!” He watched eight sections begin to cave in one after another, like dominoes.
“After the first balcony collapsed, it pulled the next one, and so on, and so on. It was the gate the bulls go through that stopped the collapse. Otherwise we’d be talking about a much bigger tragedy,” Ortiz told reporters.
50 volunteers from the civil defense worked hard to get those severely injured of the 322 to the town’s hospital. Firefighters and the police also intervened as the health system sent a “red alert” to the community.
Colombia President Iván Duque expressed his concern for the victims through his social media.
He called for an immediate investigation into the matter. Bullfighting is one of the popular sports activities in Colombia.
