CORRUPTION: National Council Of Sports Sues Netball Federation For Defamation

The National Council of Sports (NCS), the body which is responsible for administrating all Sports federations in Uganda has sued one of its own, Uganda Netball Federation.

NCS accuses the president of the Netball Federation of defamation. This is after the Uganda Netball Federation president Sarah Babirye Kityo accused NCS General secretary Bernard Ogwel of soliciting a bribe from her.

She further said she received only Shs186m yet Ogwel asked her to account for Shs 425m. Kityo, therefore, wondered why she was accounting for money she didn’t receive.

Furthermore, she said all the problems in different sports Federations in Uganda have been caused by NCS. NCS however counter-reacted by suing her at the CID for defamation.

The body revealed that whatever Ms Kityo revealed is a falsehood. According to NCS, the netball federation’s problems arise from poor governance and accountability.

The National Council Of Sports further revealed that it has tried severally to have the netball issues resolved. However, all attempts have proved futile.

“The issues of Uganda Netball Fed emanate specifically from poor governance & accountability. NCS has held several engagements with the Federation Executives, patrons, athletes, delegates & other stakeholders to try to resolve the issues raised internally, but this has been futile,” part of NCS statement about the Uganda Netball Federation woes stated.

This comes after the Uganda Netball league was suspended. The Federation failed to clear its rent arrears and had its offices closed.

However, it’s not only the netball Federation crying foul about the maladministration of NCS. Almost all sports federations have been failed by the NCS.
