Excitement Prevails As 2022 Uganda Basketball League Returns

The FUBA National Basketball League(NBL) is one of the biggest sporting events on Uganda’s sports calendar. Following a two-year closure of the league due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the league is returning.

The league is set to tip-off on Friday, March 11, 2022.

Officials of the FUBA NBL confirmed that their partnership with Tusker Lite as the season’s major sponsor will continue.

The sponsors improved their package to Shs. 200,000,000 during a press briefing at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Wednesday, 9th March 2022.

The league’s anticipated first round will run for three months, from March 11 to May 15, 2022.

The league president Nasser Sserunjogi was represented by FUBA General Secretary Hudson Ssegamwenge. He described the upcoming league as one that will be worth following.

“We have not had a full basketball season since the 2019 finals, which were won by City Oil after beating the UCU Canons. It’s exciting for us as FUBA, the players, partners like Tusker Lite, and all basketball fans across the country for the league to return.

We have 13 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams that will play a total of 123 games in the first round of the season. It’s going to be spectacular,” Secretary Hudson said

Furthermore, he expressed FUBA’s gratitude toward the main sponsor Tusker Lite for standing with the game of basketball by returning as the lead sponsor for the league.

In the opening games, it will go down at the Lugogo Indoor Arena this Friday, 11th March 2022. A doubleheader will open the doors to the season.

KCCA Leopards face KIU Rangers in the women’s opener during the early kickoff. In the subsequent duel, Seven-time champions City Oil will also square up with Namuwongo (NAM) Blazers.

“We are excited that the league is returning. As City Oilers, the target and objective is to win again. City Oilers is ready to battle, to war. This season is ours again. We look beyond the domestic league” James Okello, a front-court player revealed.

Following a 5-year partnership agreement, Next Media Services will broadcast some of this season’s games live via their Sanyuka Television platform.

They will play these games at Lugogo and the YMCA courts throughout the season that will see three clubs relegated and two promoted. Warriors will be missing in action after failing to register on time for unclear reasons.
