Lightning Strike Leaves 2 Kalungu Residents Dead

Residents of Nakasero village in Kalungu disctrict were left in shock over the weekend after lightning struck two people dead. The incident occurred during the Saturday evening downpour and left Joseph Jjunju 28, and Juliet Lwentale 13, dead.

According to Jjunju’s father, the two were hit by lightning as they were heading back home from a nearby spring well.

“It started raining and they were rushing home from a well. Jjunju had taken a spraying machine for cleaning after spraying weed in the garden and the minor had gone to fetch water. It was unfortunate that both died in spot,” he said.

The vice chairperson of Kyamulibwa sub-county, Mr. Godfrey Wasajja also blamed the incident on the rampant tree cutting in the area. He revealed that the area had a forest cover in the past and this made these lightning incidents unheard of.

“We have always warned people against cutting down trees, but they have failed to take heed. This should be an eye opener to all of us and those who can afford, should install lightning arresters on their houses,” he said.

It costs between shs750,000-2million to install lightning arresters on an average house. This also depends on the number of copper strips used and the size and height of the house.
