Manchester United Goalkeeper Andre Onana Blames Himself For Their Loss

Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana has decided to take responsibility for his club’s loss to German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils lost 4-3 at the Allianz Arena in their opening match for the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League season.

An opening goal from Leroy Sane in the 27th minute opened the scoring for the Bavarians. This is however a shot that Andre Onana could have kept out but spilled the ball into the back of his net.

Bayern ended the first half 2-0 up with the second coming from Serge Gnabry in the 32nd minute.

Erik Ten Hag’s side were given some hope after their new summer signing Rasmus Hojlund pulled one back as the second half started.

However, England captain Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot after Christian Eriksen’s handball.

United however kept on going and Casemiro scored a second for them in the 88th minute. Mathys Tel dashed the hopes of the English Premier League side with Bayern’s 4th in the 92nd minute of additional time.

Brazilian Casemiro pulled a third for the Devils but there wasn’t enough time to pull a positive result from the game.

Onana requested to speak to the media in the post-match press conference.  He said that if it hadn’t been for his error they could have won the game.

“I’m the one who let the team down. … It’s because of me we didn’t win this game….. I have to learn from it.”

The Cameronian replaced Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea who departed after his contract wasn’t renewed by the club. Prior to leaving, De Gea had won the best golden glove for most clean sheets in the EPL.

Some fans are now thinking that it could have been a mistake to replace De Gea with Onana. This wasn’t the first mistake the former Inter Milan goalkeeper has made.

Meanwhile, he’s now conceded 13 goals from 6 matches across all competitions in his inaugural season.
