MP Kamuntu’s Defamation Case Hearing Begins In Kabale High Court

The Kabale High Court has commenced hearing of a defamation case where Member of parliament in Rubanda District Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera sued four people.

The four include Rubanda District Deputy speaker and Rubanda District Service commission chairperson.

On Tuesday, His worship Gordon Muhimbise, the Kabale High court Assistant Registrar started hearing the case.

However, Justus Muhangi, the defendant’s lawyer asked court for leave to file the application of rejection of the petition.

Kamuntu apparently sued Pierre Mbabazi the Rubanda district Deputy Speaker, Dr Narcis Kabatereine the Chairperson of Rubanda District service commission, Henry Wachaga Turinawe and Godfrey Binaisa. He sued them in accusations of defamation.

Through his lawyer, Kamuntu said that the defendants publicly used different media houses to defame him.

They apparently said that they worked with the plaintiff and Kamuntu investments Uganda limited in the mine at Nyakyonga.

On the side of the defendants, they claim that the plaintiff and his company illegally mine iron ore in the area after failing to compensate the alleged landowners. The plaintiff however says that this is a false allegation.

Kamuntu further said the defendants publicly said the plaintiff is indebted to them to a tune of over shs2billion.

Kamuntu demands that the defendants publicly take back the said defamatory statements. They should also apologise via the media houses they used to defame his name.

He also wants them to pay a total of shs 5million for general damages.

His worship Muhimbise granted the leave and gave the lawyer of the defendants Muhangi up to 12th April 2022 to have filed and served Kamuntu lawyers to also have replied by 26th April 2022.

The rejoinder to be filed by 29th April 2022 as the ruling by the Judge will be on notice.
