Payments For Standard Gauge Railway To Be Cashless – Kenyan Railways

On Tuesday, January 24, Kenya Railways Corporation announced its plans to scrap cash payments for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train tickets. The corporation noted in a public notice that its operations for the Madaraka Express would fully be cashless.

It also said that this will take effect on 1 February, 2023. To replace the cash payment system, Kenya Railways announced payments by mobile money, debit and credit cards.

“We will no longer be accepting cash for the purchase of tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service stations. Customers are therefore advised to use mobile money or debit/credit cards at all points of service. We thank you for your continued support,” read the notice in part.

They also provided a platform online on the Kenya Railways website where bookings can be done through a USSD code *639#. A section of Kenyans though, did not take these changes well due to the extra cost that will be incurred in the mix.

“With the current transaction costs! They should have left the cash method too,” Oscar Owino opined

Despite that though, others supported the move saying it would help streamline the Standard Gauge Railway services. These changes come after the company announced to make a stopover at the Voi station.

“The 1500 hours Madaraka Express Passenger Service train will now make a stopover at Voi Station effective February 1. Passengers from the Mombasa and Nairobi Terminal can board and alight the train at the Voi station,” KR announced then.
