President Yoweri Museveni Congratulates East Africa On Winning The 2027 AFCON Hosting Bid

President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated the three original East African countries, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania for winning the rights to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament.

The three countries combined in a campaign dubbed East Africa Pamoja while bidding. Yesterday the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo announced that this bid was successful.

Taking to his X page (Twitter), Museveni said that he was elated with this news. This is because this is going to be very good for the different sectors of East Africa, especially via tourism.

“I received good news that our joint bid with Kenya and Tanzania to host the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2027 was successful. I thank the organizers for putting up a good case for East Africa. This will promote our countries and positively impact our economies, especially the tourism sector,” President Yoweri Museveni said.

It should be noted that AFCON has been hosted by 18 countries since its inauguration in 1957. However, none of these has ever been from East Africa. This is therefore going to be huge for these countries.

There is still a lot of work to be done in the remaining three years especially for Uganda in terms of facilities. Currently, there are no CAF and FIFA-approved stadiums.

Namboole is still under construction while Nakivubo which is almost complete still hangs in doubt whether it will be approved. St Mary’s Kitende might pass for a training ground.

On the other hand, there is only one airport, Entebbe which also looks congested. However, there are hopes that things will change for the better in the remaining few years.

There are proposed stadiums such as the John Akii Bua stadium, an airport, and a stadium in Hoima among others.
