The Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, Hon Thomas Tayebwa has said that mental health needs to be given priority in the country. He said this as he paid tribute to famous US Golfer, Grayson Murray.
Murray, a two time PGA tournament winner shocked the world over the weekend when he took his own life aged just 30 years.
He had just withdrawn from the second round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas. Apparently, the golfer had talked about his struggle with depression, anxiety and alcoholism.
It’s not clear what triggered him to take his own life. However, but one thing that is for sure is he was struggling. It’s from this that Hon Tayebwa centered his message. According to the legislator, mental health should be a concern for everyone. Mental health patients should also be given the care they need.
Read his statement below;
“Depression, anxiety, stress, and other mental health-related issues must be a cause for concern for all of us. PGA golfer Grayson Murray took his own life yesterday after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge, having played 16 holes of round 2. Let’s give mental illness the attention it deserves; we are all potential victims. Rest in Peace Murray,’” he wrote.
It should be noted that Parliament last week launched a mental health awareness campaign. This was commissioned by the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Mathias Mpuuga.
Mpuuga while launching it said that there has always been the need to prioritize the streamlining of mental health services across the different sectors of the country.
Furthermore, the MP said that such an approach will help to reduce the growing cases of mental health issues in the country.
