Authorities in the United States and Europe approved the test and the device needed to process it. Trials on more than 500 patients were conducted and it accurately detected the virus in over 97% of the cases.
A UK-based life sciences company LumiraDx developed the technology. LumiraDx has also struck a deal to supply NHS in Scotland. Authorities say the test that detects the Covid-19 antigen protein is faster than other rapid tests under trials currently.
Most of the other rapid tests provide results in an average time of 90 minutes and this works in only 12 minutes.
The service is available as a private pre-flight test. It is majorly for people who require a covid 19 test before traveling abroad. It is also available for people seeking peace of mind before going to see their relatives and friends.
Over the coming months, the launch might extend up to 200 stores due to the high demand and positive feedback. The equipment connects to a cloud system that could potentially allow a speedy tracking of the disease outbreak.
Speedy and comprehensive testing is essential in the efforts to contain the second wave of the virus.
