Echeku joined Kayunga Mixed Primary School for his primary one. However, over the years in his academic journey, the boy has faced a number of obstacles.
The biggest one of these obstacles is the fact that he is a slow learner. This obstacle has seen Echeku repeat many of his classes and has turned him into a laughing stock among his peers.
“Although I was always attentive in class, I often failed exams,” Echeku says.
He further explained that his teachers always advised him to consult his classmates for assistance but they always just made fun of him.
In 2022, Echeku joined primary six and as a 14-year-old in that class, he was much bigger and taller than his classmates. They often made fun of him for this and he said they also gave him nicknames.
At times he would miss lessons in a bid to avoid his classmates taunting him. At the end of the year, Echeku got promoted to primary seven but said he had had it up to here with his classmates. He consequently decided to drop out of school.
“My dream is now shattered because I am no longer studying,” he says.
However, the head teacher of the school Ms Jane Nayiga, retained him to work as a gate keeper. He is paid Shs50,000 a month and works during the day until 5pm.
On a sad note, Echeku says the ridicule from his OBs and OGs has worsened. He says they disrespect him and abuse him while he executes the duties of his office.
Echeku’s mother, Ms Rosemary Kigongo said her son’s decision to drop out of school made her unhappy.
“The job he is doing can only help him as a young boy, but cannot help him when he grows up,” she says.
