200 Pilgrims Begin Their Foot Journey From Kabale To Namugongo

As of today morning, over 200 pilgrims from Kabale Diocese started a journey to Namugongo. The pilgrimage will see them make their way to the Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo ahead of the June 3 Martyrs Celebrations.

Pilgrims from Kisoro, Rubanda, and Kabale districts assembled at Kabale diocesan headquarters on Saturday. They later had a holy mass at St Mary’s Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale Municipality. A catechist, Alphonse Biraho at Christ the King Catholic Church said the pilgrims were flagged off at 5:00am.

Police appealed to the pilgrims to observe maximum discipline while on the road and cooperate with police officers for their own safety. They were also asked to be very mindful of other road users while they are on their journey of faith.

The 2023 Martyr’s Day celebrations are to be led by the Catholic Church’s diocese of Jinja. The day will also be celebrated under the theme; “Lord increase our faith”, which is extracted from Luke 17:5.

The annual Martyr’s Day celebration was set aside to honor the martyrs who were killed for their faith on orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the king of Buganda.

They were killed between 1885 and 1887 for abandoning their African beliefs to convert to Christianity.
