The Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson said the incident happened at around 8 pm on Wednesday. He said the boy, Danson Bwambale, 6; a son to police constable, Pascazia Kiiza picked a gun and started to play with it.
“Kiiza returned home with the gun and kept it behind his children’s bed. The gun was kept while loaded with a bullet in the chamber and when the 6 year old saw it, he started playing with it,’’ Kasasira said.
Eventually, the boy pulled the trigger while playing with the gun leading to a fatal death instantly. Police took the the body of the deceased to Ruhoko health center IV for postmortem. Police registered a case of murder by suicide after recovering the gun.
This incident points to negligence on the officer’s side for leaving a loaded gun in the reach of children. According to the laws governing possession of a firearm, it is mandatory for the person to ensure it is unloaded and the ammunition kept separately.
It is very dangerous when one’s weapon falls into the hands of the wrong person while it is loaded. Trigger locks and safety catches go a long way towards preventing unauthorized use of guns.
