Accident Sees Two Crushed Beyond Recognition

An accident in Kanungu District has seen two people losing their lives. Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional Police Spokesperson identified the dead as Natumanya Naboth and Natukunda Marvin.

Natumanya, 20, was a boda boda rider and resident of Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu District. Natukunda, 18, happened to be one of his passengers who also perished in the accident.

Accidents have recently been on the rise in Uganda with statistics showing a total of 200 deaths in two weeks after the Easter break.

This also presented over 600 people being fatally injured in the same period. In recent developments, the police has released the names of two accident victims who died in an accident in Kanungu.

Maate described the accident as unfortunate and said it involved two other vehicles belonging to CHICO Construction Company. The two vehicles registration numbers UBF 137P and T737DZX were driven by Ssenyonga Simon and Magezi Ali respectively.

The deceased victims were traveling on a motorcycle with another passenger whose name has not been released yet. According to police reports, the vehicles and the motorcycle were heading in the same direction, from Kanungu.

When they reached Nyamwegabira, Ssenyonga Simon in the UBF 137P vehicle knocked the motorcycle from behind.

While the victims still lay there on the ground, Magezi Ali in the T737DZX came from behind and stepped on them. This instantly killed the boda boda rider and one of the passengers with the other one escaping with minor injuries.

According to Maate, the police arrived at the scene immediately and took the dead bodies to Kihihi Health Center IV for postmortem.

Both drivers of the trucks were arrested immediately and are currently locked up at Kihihi Police Station. The police registered the case under reference number TAR 09/2023.
