The water vessels will carry travelers from Nakiwogo in Entebbe to Bukakata in Masaka and vice versa.
The update comes after the closure of the Kampala-Masaka highway after floods made away with part of the Katanga bridge. This forced travelers to divert to Mpigi via Sembabule to Masaka, a route way longer than the old one.
MV Kalangala’s trip will have a stopover at Kalangala district from Nakiwogo before making its way to Masaka. As for MV NODL-Victoria, it will make a direct sail to Bukakata in Masaka.
MV NODL-Victoria will strictly transport passengers while MV Kalangala will transport both passengers and cargo. They both will only make one trip a day.
Mr Sadala Musoke is the CEO of Nation Oil Distributors limited, a firm managing both vessels. He said they set up this alternative route after consulting with stakeholders.
“Water transport is the safest and cheapest means of transport but many of our people don’t acknowledge that. This is an opportunity Ugandans going to Masaka must utilize to minimize the time spent on the road. This is since this will take them only three hours depending on the environment on the lake,” Mr Musoke said.
He further said that the charges will only be shs15,000. MV NODL-Victoria’s manager, Ms Idah Musoke said the government subsidized the maiden route to facilitate people who wish to use water transport.
When the vessels leave Nakiwogo at 1:00pm, they will be expected to dock at Bukakata landing site at 4:30pm.
Then on Tuesday morning, the vessel will leave early at 8am and arrive in Nakiwogo at 12:30pm. Ms Idah said they will be doing the same for this entire week unless something comes up.
