Ambulance Catches Fire Killing Patient, Nurse, And Attendant In Fort Portal-Kasese Road

Wednesday afternoon saw a tragedy occur as three people were killed by a fire that destroyed an ambulance as they drove along the Kasese-Fort Portal road.

The ministry of health (MoH) said the incident occurred as the emergency care teams transferred a patient from Bwera Government Hospital to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.

Unfortunately, the ambulance in which they traveled, registration number UG 291M caught fire while in transit.

“Our Fort Portal emergency response team reported that five people were on board at the time of the fire that started in the patient cabin. The three people who were in the patient’s cabin including an emergency nurse, the attendant and patient died in the fire,” the Health Ministry said.

They however had two survivors, the driver and another attendant who sat in the front cabin. The two managed to exit the car. However, they escaped with severe burns. They later rushed them to to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Authorities have identified the deceased as Robert Asaba, 53 who was the patient. Then Peter Baluku, 36, a nursing officer attached to Bwera Government Hospital and an unnamed attendant.

A team from the emergency medical services from the MoH’s headquarters in Kampala has since been sent. They will evacuate the causalities from Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital.

This is because there is a specialized burns unit to handle their severe burns.

Authorities still don’t know the exact cause of the fire. However, experts will conduct investigations to establish the cause.
