Amuru, Omoro And Nwoya Districts Receive 3 Ambulances

The Belgian Development Agency, Enabel, donated three state-of-the-art ambulances to the Ministry of health. The agency did this through its Enabling Health in Acholi (EHA) project together with funding from USAID.

All three ambulances cost a whooping Shs 780m and will transport acutely ill and injured patients. Those in luck are people around the community and lower health facilities.

They will therefore take these to referral centers of Amuru, Omoro and Nwoya.

The Enable Uganda Resident Representative, Tom Vanneste said that they refurbished and equipped the ambulances with recommended specifications for type B ambulances. This is as per the Ministry of Health guidelines.

“The ambulances will be able to provide basic life support services like oxygen therapy, nebulization, monitoring of vital parameters and automatic external defibrillation. The equipping and upgrade was for the first time locally implemented in close collaboration with the MOH Emergency Medical Services and the engineering department,” Vanneste said.

Dr. Aceng, in her speech, advised the district leaders against using ambulances to transport food, bodies, or even officials for meetings. To allow easy coordination, she said they will station them at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.

“The ambulances are expected to transport acutely ill and injured patients both from the community and from lower-level facilities to hospitals that can handle them. These in addition to a few in the region will avert unnecessary deaths happening due to delayed or missing emergency services,” Dr. Aceng said.

Currently, some of the most common emergencies happening there include material emergencies, children with acute illnesses, and road accidents.

A study carried out in Acholi also revealed that there are quite a few functioning ambulances. However, they have not equipped those available well.

The National EMS policy 2021 sets clear standards and guidelines for establishing regional-based coordination systems. Additionally, fully functional ambulances is one component of the EMS system.
