Angelina Jolie, the Oscar-winning US actress, has been an ambassador for the UN refugee agency UNHCR for more than 20 years. However, though, she recently announced that she will be stepping down from the position.
“I believe in many things the UN does, particularly the lives it saves through emergency relief. I will be working now with organizations led by people most directly affected by conflict, that give the greatest voice to them,” Jolie, 47, said.
The UNHCR portrayed her as one of the most outstanding and influential refugee rights advocates. She posted on her Instagram page and captioned saying, “After over 20 years, I am stepping down today from my work at the UN refugee agency.”
“Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I am dedicated to working with them for the rest of my life,” she said.
She however didn’t give any information on which organization she would work with next. Angelina Jolie has worked with the UNHCR since 2001 and in 2012, she became the agency’s special envoy.
In recent months, she has met displaced people in war-torn Ukraine, Yemen, and also Burkina Faso.
