She terminated the contract after she visited the place and found shoddy works.
The road in conversation connects from Kakabara sub-county in Kyegegwa district to Nabingola in Mubende. It’s construction took place under the Development Response to Displacement Impact Project (DRDIP).
The intention of the program under the office of the Prime Minister is to support refugee-hosting communities.
On Saturday, the Prime Minister decided to tour the DRDIP projects in Kyegegwa district. The area leaders told her that the contractor, PEKASA, had to complete the project in September.
Unfortunately to everyone’s disappointment, they have not completed the road six months after the signing of the contract.
Furthermore, they argued that the road is impassible, narrow, and without culverts. Leaders thereafter requested that Uganda National Roads Authority takes charge of the construction works immediately.
Apparently, they have paid the contractor by far Shs 700m of the approved Shs 1.8bn. After the complaints from the leaders, the PM had no choice but to terminate the contract immediately.
‘’For me, using the powers i have as a prime minister, i have terminated the contract. Let us pay other people who want to do work and you must account for the money. The work done must commiserate with the money that has been paid and if it is not, we shall arrest you. I want the engineer DRDIP, your contract is also terminated,’’ the PM said
Nabbanja also faulted the local leaders for failing to supervise government projects giving room to shoddy work. The managing director of PEKASA, George Sande declined to comment on the delays.
