Orthodox Archbishop Makarios from Nairobi has been appointed the caretaker and overseer of Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga. He died on Sunday evening at the age of 76.
Mr. John Kibuuka one of the administrators of the Orthodox Church in Uganda revealed the development. He also revealed that the late prelate left for Athens, Greece, for his pastoral work about two months ago, but fell sick from there.
The dean of St Nicholas Orthodox Church Namugnoona near Kampala, Fr Nicholas Bayego said the caretaker will oversee all burial arrangements.
This will be when the late’s body arrives back in the country any time now. Fr. Bayego said that for about two years, Lwanga had felt unwell as they had previously diagnosed him with cancer.
‘’Actually two years back, he started wishing us and other people goodbye that he had played his part and it was time for him to meet the lord,’’ Fr. Bayego recalled.
Sources at the church revealed that they will bury the late near the grave of his mother, Kezia Babitaka. The burial will take place in Ddegeya, Luwero district.
When reporters visited the Namungoona church the seat of the Orthodox faith, there were a few faithful in the place.
The few who had gathered looked emotional. Some female followers were mourning with the precincts of the church.
