Shamim Nambassa, the Makerere University guild president, has condemned the arrests of those she calls “comrades” saying everything was unfair. On, 14th July 2022, Makerere was in shambles after a student died in a stabbing incident.
The University was warming up to guild elections the following day. Bewatte Betungura, 27, a law student from UCU died while in the political atmosphere of Makerere.
Apparently, during the campaigns, a scuffle ensued between NUP and FDC supporters that resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students.
The students were allegedly led by Hon. Kabuye Frank, currently detained as well. Among those arrested was NUP guild candidate, Kenneth Katushabe and a one Muzafaru didn’t survive.
However, the current, guild president says these arrests were unfair though they too want justice for the deceased.
“There have been arrests, including comrades Kenneth and Muzafaru that were taken in custody after helping rush the deceased to University Hospital. Makerereans keep wondering why these random arrests at a time yet there are cameras in that whole place.”
“If it’s not a witch hunt, what then is it that will keep Muzafaru in your dungeons and yet you withhold any evidence that could either condemn or save them?
We need justice for Bewatte, but we also need justice for Musafaru, Kenneth and all those wrongly detained,” Nambassa added.
Meanwhile, investigations are still underway to find out what really happened.
