Women with disabilities have asked government to avail them with employment opportunities so that they can also improve their standards of living.
The executive director of the Albinism Umbrella Uganda, Olive Namutebi, said there is need for reasonable accommodation in order to improve the status of women with disability.
Namutebi says much as they have skills, they don’t give them opportunities because of their disabilities.
“We call upon the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to employ women with disability. They have got a lot of skills but they have not been given a chance to exercise them,” Namutebi said.
The Women with disabilities also asked for support from everyone in issues about disability.
Lydia Kiwumulo, the representative of the Disability Commission in the ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, encouraged disability activists to pass on the knowledge.
“I commit to pass on the knowledge of inclusiveness of government programs to persons with disability.”
There is still a problem of discrimination against people with disabilities in the country. Up until now, some people still think people with disabilities are unemployable.
They think they can’t do anything which is not true at all.
Meanwhile, these women also claimed when they report cases regarding sexual abuse, they never take seriously. Apparently, police always ask for fuel to work on these cases so they asked government to intervene.
