Bobi Wine’s film “The Peoples President” was recorded as a documentary during his 2021 presidential campaign. It was his first time to contest for president. The singer had previously been in parliament for one term as the MP representing Kyadondo East.
During the 2021 presidential campaign, Mr. Wine faced so many challenges. Some of them included the death of innocent Ugandans, the torture of his supporters, arrests, and kidnaps among others.
He was lucky enough that after showing the film in different theatres in the United States, the People’s President documentary got nominated at the Oscars.
It was the first Ugandan film to be nominated at the Oscars. Unfortunately, it didn’t get to win the award as most Ugandans were excited and waiting for the first Oscar to be brought back home.
The movie ‘Oppenheimer’ won the most awards including best picture. Christopher Nolan, Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell were also among those who took home the gold.
It should be noted that Bobi Wine’s documentary captured some of the most gruesome scenes during the campaign trail. At some points, it captured security operatives kidnapping members of the People Power movement.
