Members of Parliament yesterday learned that the state-owned Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) owns 11 out of over 300 radio stations in Uganda.
To protest the ‘discriminatory advertising directive’, members of NAB banned coverage of all government events.
However, together with the Editors’ Guild, NAB recently suspended the ban since they are meeting with the president.
Back in July, NAB, sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ramathan Ggoobi. In the letter, they say “implementation of the said directive will not only contravene the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda but also set a precedent that goes against government’s policy that champions a private sector-led economy,”
The meeting with the president today will help iron out the public advertisement cash row.
In other news previously reported by NEWSLEXPOINT.com, Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, assured people that no one will switch off Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC). This comes after allegations that the station had accumulated satellite debts.
The National broadcaster had until September 30th 2022 to clear the debt according to the media report. UBC reportedly had to pay $988,225 (Shs3.7b) arrears or risk being switched off.
