Bukwo District Officials Embezzle Shs700 Million Through Ghost Projects

Four district officials from Bukwo are reportedly on the run after police summoned them to record statements regarding embezzlement.

The officials are said to have created several ghost Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) III projects leading to a shs 700m loss.

The culprits include Jonah Chewere the NUSAF desk officer, Stephen Sikor Mella the acting human resource officer, Franklin Kityo, Dismas Sande, and Alfred Sokuton

They expected the officers to appear at Bukwo central Police station on Tuesday but the police officers waited in vain. None of the officials has even appeared at their offices ever since they were summoned.

Patricia Chemonges, a resident of Bukwo district went to the sub-county offices to renew her license but no one was available to work on her.

‘’The office of the sub-county chief and the accountant of Amanang were all closed from yesterday (Tuesday) up to date but I’m told they have gone away because the police want them,’’ she said.

Another resident said despite the officials making away with people’s money, he is happy with the new RDC because he has shaken up everyone.

Another said that there is law everywhere in the country. If they really ran away with the funds, the law will catch up with them.

Some of the said ghost projects include Lamaywet community access road in Saum sub-county which costs shs 61,749,000.

Another project is Chepsouker mini irrigation in Amanang sub-county worth Shs 70m among other projects.

Julius Chelimo, the newly elected Bukwo LC V chairperson has promised to kick corruption out of the district.

‘’If they were embezzling public funds during the previous regime, it will not happen in my regime. I will not be a friend to corruption,’’ he said.
