She stated that she had a meeting with students in forms one and two that afternoon. She had even invited guests to offer counseling to the students in a session organized by the school,
‘’I had a baraza with form one and form two from morning until around 2:30 pm where I had even invited counselors to talk to the students,’’ she revealed.
She and her guests went for lunch after the session within the school compound and as she walked back, she met a colleague who seemed anxious. The teacher she met informed her that one of the Buruburu Girls School dormitories had caught on fire.
A number of ambulances came to the school to help ferry injured students to the hospital to receive treatment. So far, 59 students have sustained injuries and are receiving treatment in Metropolitan and Jamaa hospitals in Nairobi.
Maina requested concerned parents to not take their children back home as the school has the situation under control.
At about 6 pm on Sunday, videos circulating on social media showed students jumping from one of the dormitories. This raised concern among the public.
Students were also encouraged to jump onto the pile of mattresses to escape from the dormitory which had been engulfed in smoke.
