Eng Winnie Byanyima has debunked claims by opposition figures that President Yoweri Museveni is naturally a bad man, saying such submissions are not true.
The respected Ugandan politician and wife of Dr Kizza Besigye made the remarks at the Uganda North American Association (UNAA) Convention in United States on Saturday.
“Museveni is not a devil,” said the Oxfam Executive Director. “It is the people around him that have turned him into a bad man,” added the former Mbarara Municipality MP.
Follow @newslexpointA moderate politician, Byanyima has in recent months called for dialogue between Dr Kizza Besigye and the ruling establishment led by President Museveni.
The annual Convention is being held at the Boston Park Plaza, Boston in Massachusetts, which hosts the largest Ugandan community in North America.
The UNAA brings together Ugandans living and working in the US and Canada. This year’s Convention is being held under the theme: ‘United to Empower Women’.
During the political debate, Byanyima also expressed alarm at the chaotic scenes that unfolded at the convention including booing of speakers. She said discussions should be well structured to benefit members and that participants must refrain from name-calling.
Byanyima further welcomed the UNAA initiative of calling Ugandan government officials to interact with Ugandans in the Diaspora. On his part, Dr Besigye reiterated his call for a national dialogue.
“There is need to sit down and chat a way forward about what has gone wrong,” said Besigye.
While the opposition wants talks with President Museveni, its members have set tough conditions including an international audit of the 2016 elections which many say is not acceptable to the ruling party.
Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanya clarified that Parliament was not extravagant in sending MPs to the UNAA gathering. “The money used on people who came here was budgeted for by Parliament and not from the Health sector,” said Oulanya.
Besigye had earlier claimed that the MPs were sponsored by government.
