Chief Justice Returns As Judiciary Announces Court Vacation Starting Tomorrow

The Judiciary has announced that starting tomorrow, July 15, 2023, all civil courts across the country will be on vacation.

A Friday morning press release implied that vacation for the High Court and Magistrates’ Courts will commence on July 15 and end on August 15, 2023. The Supreme Court and Court of Appeal will have their vacation running through the month of August.

The court vacation comes as a mandate and is provided for by The Judicature (Court Vacation) Rules S.I. 13-20. It is usually scheduled between terms of court and starts at the end of one term ending at the beginning of another term.

However though, courts handling criminal cases will operate normally during the vacation period. Apparently the vacation does not apply to this category of cases.

Judicial officers often use this period to write judgements and rulings in case of urgent matters.

According to the Judiciary, all court registries will remain open for filing of cases and attending to the registry-related services.

The news of the court vacation came just after Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo’s recent return to the country. He had been out of the country for over a month as he sought medical treatment over an unidentified illness.

His welcome party offered him a bouquet of fresh flowers and in turn he hugged every visitor that came to welcome him home.

The day before, the late received praise from the legal fraternity for her distinctive character and quality of work output.
