Uganda Airlines Launches Flight From Uganda To South Africa

China Grants Uganda Airlines Landing Rights

The national carrier, Uganda Airlines has announced that China granted it landing rights at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China.

The airlines took to Twitter on Saturday to describe the development as a ‘milestone’ since flights to China had been stopped due to Covid-19.

“Ni Hao #Guangzhou! A toast to yet another great milestone! Uganda Airlines has been granted landing rights to China! Cheers to a new world of greater connectivity,” the tweet stated.

Ms Shakira Rahim, the public relations manager of Uganda Airlines, spoke to reporters last evening. During her interview, she said this is the first-ever direct flight from Uganda to China after the outbreak of the pandemic.

“Currently, there is no direct flight from Entebbe to China, which brings an amazing opportunity to tap into this gap. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, there were more than 25,000 passengers from China to Uganda, according to 2019 travel data,” she said.

She further added that these direct flights will boost the business sector. Thisis because the national carrier will handle both passengers and cargo.

Furthermore, Ms Rahim revealed that China approved the resumption of passenger flights through a letter to the Civil Aviation Authority.

However, she said they limited the national carrier to one flight per week to any point in China except. The only exemption is Beijing and Shanghai, for reasons that they did not reveal.

Mr Isa Sekitto, the Kampala Capital City Traders Association (KACITA) spokesperson, called upon authorities to grant visas to Ugandans seeking to travel to China.

He said this will make trade easier for people who order goods online having a chance to physically do it. Mr Sekito also said Ugandan traders import about 90 percent of goods from China. This is surpassing the exports by about three times.

Recently, Uganda Airlines also received rights to start flying to Heathrow Airport in London, UK.
