Citizens from 15 African countries will have to post bonds of up to $15,000 to get a visitor visa to the United States. This is according to a new temporary rule by the outgoing Trump administration and it will be affected on 24th December 2020.
According to the US State Department, the six-month pilot project, which targets those on visits and business trips will help deter those who overstay their visas.
Citizens in countries include Angola, Burkina Faso, Chad, D.R. Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mauritania, Sudan, Sao Tome and Prince, Cape Verde, and Burundi are affected.
Incoming US President Joe Biden, on the other hand, promised to reverse many of Trump’s laws on immigration. However, overturning these policies could take months, not to mention, years.
In related events, Joe Biden has said the outreach from the White House over the transition of power has been sincere. He made these remarks as he unveiled his choice of top officials for when he takes over from Donald Trump on 20th January 2021.
Mr. Trump recently agreed to allow the formal transition process to begin on Monday almost 3 weeks after the polls. He, however, still refuses to admit defeat, repeating unsubstantiated claims the 3rd November vote was rigged.
