He said most of those that beg money haven’t travelled so much to see how the world is advanced. On top of that, they didn’t have enough education and that has been a big problem.
Begging for money by comedians from the audience has been one of the problems in Ugandan comedy industry. People have complained about it severally but some comedians have failed to stop it as it became a habit.
As someone that hosts a weekly comedy show known at comedy store, Kalela revealed that they have talked about it in their meetings. However, despite comedians promising not to beg money from the audience, once they reach the stage, things change.
According to Kalela, it is absurd that some comedians see an opportunity of making money from the audience once given a chance to get on stage.
“Some of our comedians are local comedians. They have not traveled so much and seen international shows and how they are executed. They didn’t go to school far enough. Also, they don’t research, among others. So, when they come up, they use every chance they have to get money,” Comedian Kalela said.
It should be noted that Uganda’s comedy industry is one of the fastest growing at the moment. The only challenge they are facing is that they don’t usually get international spaces to showcase their talent and explore. Also, they mostly use local languages are are limited only to the local market.
