At the moment, West Nile is supplied by a 3.5-megawatt dam in Nyagak. They had hoped for an additional 6.6 megawatts upon completion of the Nyagak III Dam construction.
However, during the weekend, Ms Ruth Nankabirwa, the Energy and Mineral Development Minister delivered disappointing news. She said the dam will be completed in two months from now, pushing back the completion to September.
Despite the speculated time for completion, she said this can only be achieved if the government releases Shs28 billion to the contractor.
“I am impressed by the progress of the work despite the fact that as a government, we have not been able to fulfill our part of the grant that we are supposed to release. The developer has continued to find ways of borrowing money and making sure that work does not stall,” Ms Nankabirwa said on Saturday.
She further pledged to continue engaging the Finance Ministry to ensure fulfillment of the president’s promise when he toured the West Nile region. The president promised that the remaining money totaling Shs28 billion would be released.
Back in 2022, the contractor, Dott Services asked the government to provide Shs22 billion to help complete construction. The residents in the region were urged to be more patient.
This is as the government and contractor are working restlessly to complete the project.
However, locals say they have waited too long for the Nyagak III dam. The connection to the national grid from Olwiyo station has taken too long.
