Coronavirus: Hospitals In China Filling Up – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that there are growing concerns of another Covid-19 wave in China. These concerns are being fueled by the growing number of patients that are filling up China’s hospitals.

Intensive care units are becoming very busy despite officials saying numbers are really low according to Dr Michael Ryan. The country’s figures from yesterday reported no death even though many are quite skeptical about the real impact of the virus.

As this latest wave is rippling through China, hospitals in Beijing and other cities have been filling to capacity. As part of its zero Covid policy, China has imposed strict health restrictions since 2020 and they haven’t gone away.

But the government, a fortnight ago lifted most of these restrictions. The lifting of some restrictions followed landmark protests against them.

Ever since then, the number of new cases has only gone higher causing fears of a high mortality rate, especially among the vulnerable elderly.

Despite the rise, the official figures show only five people died from Covid on Tuesday and two on Monday. This forced WHO emergencies chief, Dr Ryan, to urge China to release more information about the latest wave.

He revealed that only vaccination is the current exit strategy for the coronavirus outbreaks. In the past, China developed its own vaccines but they proved to be less effective in preventing infection.
