Covid-19 Fears Arise After Cough & Flu Wave

According to health experts, the current wave of cough and flu in the country could likely be linked to covid-19. However though, the Health Ministry said its assessment is in its final stages and is to determine the actual driver.

Some few interviews were conducted with different families who said they had relatives bedridden for days. Some other relatives reportedly lost their voices coupled with intense cough, flu and fever.

In some of the reported cases, children were unresponsive to medication that previously proved effective against the three diseases. Other children had to be rushed to the hospital and put on oxygen machines to aid their breathing.

The rising cases of these diseases interlock with news from Mulago about two patients admitted with severe Covid illness recently.

A parent in Kampala said his son needed life-support after a worsened condition following an onset of cough and flu.

“My son has been ill recently. We thought he would be improving from cough and flu, but after a month of treatment (from a clinic), we resolved to take him to the hospital (because he was not improving),” the parent said.

He added that they underestimated the illness thinking it is just a common cold. However, his son got admitted when they went to the hospital. When there, doctors put his son on a ventilator to assist his breathing.

Dealers have reported an increase in the purchase of Covidex, a National Drug Authority approved remedy for Covid-19. However, there are no immediate figures on actual sales.

One of the epidemiologists at Ministry of Health said the country will be updated tomorrow with updates on the situation.

“We are monitoring the situation. We shall communicate after thorough data analysis,” Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Health Ministry spokesperson said.

Dr. Christine Sekaggya, a physician at Mulago said they are still getting Covid-19 patients with severe illness.
