Covid-19 Pandemic Could Last Longer Despite Global Vaccine Roll Out

The head of the EU’s disease control agency warned on Friday that the novel coronavirus could last indefinitely. The pandemic might last longer despite the global infections dropping by half and the vaccine rollouts in different parts of the globe.

The ECDC chief Andrea Ammon urged European countries, in particular, to keep their guard up against the virus. He said the virus has become very adapted to humans and that it will require experts to tweak vaccines over time. He related this to the case of the seasonal flu.

Ammon told the world to prepare for the case where the virus stays with us.

After the wave of a pandemic that started in China over a year ago, hope rose among many when reports showed the rate of new infections dropped by 44.5%. This happened over the past month worldwide.

Over 107 million people are, by far, infected worldwide. Nearly 2.4 million of those have died due to the outbreak. However, experts warned that vaccines will not end the pandemic unless all countries receive doses in a fast and fair manner.

What vaccine makers plan to do.

US-based vaccine maker Moderna said it is making efforts to see to it that they increase doses in their vials by 50%. Through this, they would ensure that more vaccines reach more people hence boosting current supply levels.
Many countries re-entered lockdown after it proved in other countries to be very effective, an example being Australia. Some of these countries include Britain that went into another lockdown to curb a more transmissible variant of the coronavirus.

It could, therefore, be years, before the Covid-19 pandemic is completely wiped out of existence.
