Covid-19 Patients in Pakistan Die Due To Oxygen Shortage

Patients of the coronavirus in Pakistan are dying due to the shortage of oxygen in hospitals. The relatives of the patients have described how they begged for help as panic consumed the government-run hospital in the Northern city of Peshawar.

There have been delays in deliveries which meant that over 200 patients were left on reduced oxygen for hours. Hospital officials blame this shortage on the supply company. They suspended several staff members from work.
Pakistan is currently fighting a new wave of the virus with a total number of over 400,000 cases and over 8,000 deaths.

According to reports, problems at Khyber Teaching Hospital began after the daily supply of fresh oxygen cylinders did not arrive on Saturday evening. The 300 backup cylinders were unable to supply the required pressure for the ventilators.

Al Mureed Ali, whose mother has been ill with covid-19, said that people were running throughout the hospital to save their patients. Ali explained that the hospital then moved some of the patients  eventually to the emergency room. There was still a good oxygen supply although it also didn’t last long.

Later on, the supplies in the ER ran low as well leading to the death of several patients. The hospital left many others in deteriorating critical conditions. It came to a point where health workers asked people to buy cylinders for their patients. Only a few were able to do so.

The delayed oxygen supply from Saturday finally arrived on Sunday evening which was almost 24 hours late. The Hospital officials described the shortage as ‘’criminal negligence.’’
