Dangers Of Self-Medication In The Era Of Covid

At this rate, as the covid virus continues to infect more, self-medication has also become another kind of virus on its own. The fear in people has led them to take just about anything to get by the day. The rate at which people are mixing drugs is just alarming. It is starting to seem like any kind of flue is now covid. The moment one gets signs of a flue, they immediately run to Zinc, vitamin C, steaming and the sort.

Some experts have now confirmed that too much use of these drugs without prescription bring about covid like symptoms.

“Don’t take many medicines out of fear. Some of the medicines/preparations people are self-prescribing have similar side effects to COVID-19 symptoms. That just adds to the fear as one imagines they are getting worse. If possible talk to a pharmacist before you take any medicine” David Omongole, a pharmacist cautioned.

The Ministry of Health yesterday, came out to warn people against the same. Some people are now steaming with weed. If this goes on like this, we are going to lose more people to self medication than the virus itself. One of the causes of self-medication is the high cost of a covid test. You must pay Ugshs.250,000, before getting tested. During this lockdown, that money is just too much.

Right now the MOH should probably embark on sensitizing masses about the usage of these drugs. Messages of hope should be formulated so that people don’t live in fear much as the virus is there. Otherwise, seems like more problems are being created than being solved.
