Courtney responded through nervous tears and said this will be change. And that maybe, then, the people, can start believing in justice again.
After a deliberation of fewer than 12 hours, the jury found Mr Chavin guilty for manslaughter, second-degree murder and third-degree murder. Derek Chauvin used his knee to pin down a terrified George Floyd to the concrete until he stopped breathing.
Chauvin could be facing up to 40 years in prison even though his sentence is coming at a later date.
Courtney said she heard her mother say “amen” and nodding in a way that black women do. She agreed that justice happened for once, but she also said she isn’t celebrating yet unless it becomes a norm.
Cops like Chauvin, who are so arrogant they think they have a right to intimidate, assault and kill Black and Latino people with impunity, can’t continue to be so common in American policing.
Nor can what happened to Chauvin, who was convicted for breaking the same laws that those of us without a badge must follow, continue to be the exception.
President Biden himself described the outcome in Minneapolis as “much too rare”. He was delivering what was essentially “basic accountability” to the public.
