DOJ Revives Investigation Into The Death Of George Floyd With New Grand Jury

The Justice Department in Minneapolis empaneled a new federal jury to reinvestigate the death of George Floyd. New witnesses will be called as part of the investigation as the ex-cop who shot George goes on trial in state court next month. He is charged with the murder according to two people with the knowledge of the investigation.

The investigation into the case began last year but then it languished for unknown reasons. However, its revival is an early sign that the Biden administration will take into account every single detail that involves ‘police brutality’.

Mr. Derek Chauvin, who is white, knelt on the neck of Mr. George Floyd, a black man, for over 8 minutes as he begged for his life. Furthermore, this all happened as seen in a video released on the internet moments after the incident. Therefore, the video set off protestors across the United States, some of which led to violence in many cities.

Mr. Chauvin’s trial is set to begin on March 8. It is, however, unlikely that the Justice Department, in presenting evidence to the new grand jury, is hoping for a quick indictment of Mr. Chauvin.

As the new grand jury is set to hear new testimonies, the investigation also seems to be more focused on Mr. Chauvin. Attention has been withdrawn from the three other officers who face aiding and abetting charges.
