‘’Extensive vaccination campaign against Covid-19 kicks off in Dubai on Wednesday. Vaccination will use Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine and is free of charge,’’ the city’s media office tweeted.
The two medicine companies have recently reported that their vaccines are 95% effective in preventing the illness. The United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a part, was recently conducting trials on China’s Covid-19 vaccine. Earlier this month, they said the shot protected up to 86% of the people against Covid-19.
The Middle East’s business hub, Dubai, locked the city down for about a month earlier this year to curb the spread of the deadly virus. Passenger flights were grounded by the Emirates airline and the 2020 Expo exhibition that was to start in October was delayed by a year. Flights, however, have since resumed operations.
Ever since the outbreak, the UAE has diagnosed over 195,000 people with the virus. The Gulf nation reported over 1000 cases a day for the past two months after they had dropped to as low as 164 in August.
But according to data from Johns Hopkins, the country has a case-fatality rate of 0.3%, among the lowest globally.
