Eddy Kenzo Registers A Small Win In Fight For Copyright Law

Musician Eddy Kenzo, who also serves as president of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), seems to have achieved a breakthrough in the long-sought copyright law.

The singer has been pursuing this law for several months, and fortunately, a breakthrough has been achieved.

Dubbed the Copyright and Neighboring Rights (Amendment) Bill 2024, Kenzo revealed that it has been returned from the Parliamentary Counsel where it was approved after garnering overwhelming support from the cabinet.

The presidential advisor on creatives further said that now the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs will publish the Bill in the Gazette and then introduce it to Parliament. This will be for purposes of debate and finally being passed into law.

Furthermore, the singer stated that the Ministry of Finance has also issued the necessary funds to clear the bill.

Read his statement below;

“I am glad to inform you that the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights(Amendment) Bill 2024 was returned from the Parliamentary Counsel. It has been approved and overwhelmingly supported by the Cabinet today.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs after then will publish the Bill in the Gazette. And after that, it be introduced in Parliament for debate and Enactment.

The Ministry of Finance has also confirmed issuing the Certificate of Financial Implication to clear the Bill,” the statement partly read.

Kenzo went ahead to say that the industry’s wish to have this Bill fulfilled as a Christmas gift seems to have been fulfilled. He expressed his appreciation to President Museveni for listening to the concerns and guiding the creatives appropriately.

He then urged his fellow artists to be patient as they wait for the remaining process. This is before they can finally celebrate this achievement. The Big Talent boss also appreciated everyone who showed support, love, and prayers through this process.
