There were speculations that Salah might be one of the three overage players on Egypt’s U-23 team for the Tokyo games that start on July 22.
However, Ahmed says Liverpool is not willing to let the Liverpool star join the team in Egypt. News sources reveal Ahmed saying he didn’t think it is impossible for Salah to play on the team, he said it is only difficult.
‘’Salah agreed to lead the Olympic team during the last camp of the Egyptian team. We contacted Liverpool to allow Salah to join the Olympic team, and they said they were waiting for the approval of the technical staff,’’ Ahmed said.
He further said in the end Liverpool declined the request because they didn’t want to lose their player at the start of the season.
In addition to that, there are AFCON games in January 2022. This will further make Salah miss Premier League matches.
Despite all this, the Liverpool forward still promised to talk to his club technical staff to see if they can change their stance.
Even the Hosts, Japan, have left out Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino, 26, as they did not name him on the Olympics squad.
