The U.K. plunged into Christmas chaos after police blocked people from boarding packed trains and scrapping holidays abroad. Also, the banning of travel around Europe after London went into an emergency lockdown brought about unrest.
France suspended inbound travel from the U.K. for 48 hours on Sunday. This is in addition to Germany that halted flights arriving from Britain.
To make matters worse, Britain is still in Brexit negotiations with its European Union partners. Those talks are still at a very critical stage after the weekend.
In an unexpected turn of events, Prime Minister Boris Johnson canceled plans to allow families to see each other over the festive period. This came after the government warning that the new strain of the coronavirus in completely out of control.
Scenes of panic at train stations were seen as people defied social distancing rules to get out of the capital before the new rules took effect.
The effect on the Brexit;
For the U.K., it’s a double body blow, leaving the country potentially isolated with the pandemic still wreaking havoc. Its exit from the EU has been punctuated by a souring relationship with its neighbors. This covid-19 twist has had its once-partners putting up the shutters.
More damage will now be unleashed on the struggling European Airlines as the country was the busiest in the region on Saturday. According to Euro control, it had over 2,200 flights.
This emergency lockdown will see over 16 million Britons required to stay home after new restrictions came into force in London and southeast England.
