Facebook Is Not Part Of Social Media In Uganda At Least According To Government’s Behavior

Facebook may not be considered a part of social media in Uganda anymore. This is because even after OTT has been lifted, Facebook is not accessible without VPN. The site has been shut down since the 13th-January, a day before elections.

The public has been crying for the government to lift the ban on social media site but all in vain. When social media was unlocked after elections, only Facebook remained locked.

The president while talking about Facebook, doesn’t show any signs of lifting this ban soon. Apparently, the cause of the closure was the closure of NRM supporter’s accounts.

They just woke up one morning with no warning and their accounts were shut down. Due to this, the government decided to shut it down.

However, the public has been accessing Facebook using VPN all this while. This time round, we thought, the government would reconsider and have it open as well.

This doesn’t seem so though, because even today, without VPN you can’t access Facebook.

Does this therefore mean it’s not counted as a social media platform anymore in the country?

The site has so many users compared to all other social media platforms. On top of that, it is user friendly as well and many people use it as a customer base. Government could perhaps put up guidelines in place but not completely shut it down.

Now that Musicians are not working, the online platform is paramount to their survival. This is not going well though because its not as open as it should be.
