Fights Over Robert Mugabe’s Remains Intensifies

A traditional chief in Zimbabwe has ordered that the remains of the country’s former president Robert Mugabe be dug up and reburied at a national cemetery.

Mugabe’s successor, President Mnangagwa and others had hoped that he would be buried at the National Heroes Acre in the capital. However, when Mugabe died in 2019, his burial took place in his rural home Kutama town as per his wishes.

According to his family, Mugabe had expressed concern that his remains would be used for rituals. He said this would happen if he got buried at the national cemetery.

According to the traditional chief in the Zvimba district, a member of the Mugabe clan complained about the burial place of Mugabe. He ruled that former first lady, Grace Mugabe broke traditional norms. This was when she buried Robert Mugabe in the courtyard of his home.

They even held a hearing which Mrs. Mugabe did not attend. However, the chief fined her to pay five cows and one goat.

‘’He [chief] has no jurisdiction over Kutama. And even if the correct chief had made that ruling, we would not have appealed to the court,’’ Leo Mugabe, the family spokesperson said.
