The first human head transplant could be possible by 2017

Sergio Canavero the Italian doctor of the Turin advanced Neuromodulation group in Italy says that full body transplant where a living person’s head would be attached to a donor body, or what we simply call head transplant could be possible in 2 years from now.

What is a human head transplant?

A human head transplant is a surgical operation which involves the grafting of one’s human head onto the body of another. It should not be confused with another, hypothetical, surgical operation, the brain transplant.

Sergio first proposed the idea in 2013 but he’s moving things forward by announcing his project at the American Academy of Neurological & Orthopaedic Surgeons in Maryland in June where he’ll seek support & sponsors for his project.

In an article published this month in Surgical Neurology International, Sergio writes the procedure hinges on the reconnection of the severed stumps of the two spinal cords involved.

In a process he calls ‘GEMINI spinal cord fusion’ he writes that the key to it is the sharp severance of the cords themselves with less damage.

Sergio’s idea is based on a controversial operation where a whole head of a monkey was transplanted into a different body, this was done in 1970 by Dr. Robert White a neurosurgeon who finished a process between two rhesus monkeys but the monkey that received the transplant died after nine days.

Dr. white has carried out of 35 animal head transplants and his experiments were called grotesque and barbaric .

Despite the fact that Sergio Canavero has believe in his procedures, other surgeons have shown doubt about the procedure ever happening.

Harry Gold smith a clinical professor of neurological surgery at the University of California is among the ones who have doubt in Sergio’s procedure and some scientists don’t believe it will ever work because there are too many problems with the procedure and even though Sergio’s procedure is theoretically possible his biggest problem is finding a country that can back his idea not even US OR Europe  scientists say.

Sergio says “If society doesn’t want it, I won’t do it. But if people don’t want it in the US or Europe, that doesn’t mean it won’t be done somewhere else. I’m trying to go about this the right way, but before going to the moon, you want to make sure people will follow you.”
